This project was born three years ago, out of an encounter and an ongoing dialogue. TOMBÉ DU CIEL explores the invisible forms that surface, fleeting traces offered to the gaze. Driven by a spontaneous momentum, it first materialized in 2023 with the exhibition LE VENT EST LE DOUBLE DE L’HORIZON. Through each viewer’s gaze, the artists gradually came to grasp the full scope of their exploration: an unexpected dialogue between the fractal nature of Mandelbrot’s mathematics and pure abstraction. Two extremes converging within the image, a double vision.
Each ventures alone into the same landscape, without prior exchange. Yet, when their images are brought together, unsettling correspondences emerge. Olga du Saillant and Felix Cholet position themselves as both witnesses and interpreters, capturing shifting, fragile forms, imprints transformed by the wind, feminine silhouettes that elude and recompose themselves, traces that vanish as soon as they appear. While their black-and-white silver prints align with a classical photographic tradition, the subject matter and its treatment subtly subvert its codes. The image no longer documents; it becomes abstraction, memory, and erasure.
The experimentation with materials shifts the status of the image — it becomes an object, almost a sculpture, asserting a physical presence within the space. Each frame, custom-designed in dialogue with the work and entirely crafted by Felix Cholet, contributes to this metamorphosis. The silver-based medium pushes against its own limits, anchoring itself within a contemporary dynamic. The image is no longer merely a surface; it becomes volume, a tangible experience. To this is added the meticulous work of Olga du Saillant, who hand-executes the repiquage — a rare, manual gesture that lends each print a distinctive, artisanal dimension.
The book TOMBÉ DU CIEL brings together three years of work and extends the experience of the exhibitions. Published by equator books, it situates the works within a dialogue with modern and surrealist poetry — a major source of inspiration for the artists and the origin of their exhibition titles. The poetic fragments that accompany the images do not seek to explain them; they resonate with them like breaths or echoes. Like the photographs, they reject linear narrative in favor of an organic and abstract form.
Thus, a shared impulse takes shape — a project that is both book and exhibition, carried by the resonance of the eye and the heart.
Ce projet est né il y a trois ans, d’une rencontre et d’un dialogue. TOMBÉ DU CIEL explore les formes invisibles qui apparaissent, traces éphémères offertes au regard. Porté par un élan spontané, il s’est d’abord manifesté en 2023 avec l’exposition LE VENT EST LE DOUBLE DE L’HORIZON. Le regard de chaque spectateur a permis aux artistes d’en mesurer peu à peu la portée. Une exploration inattendue entre la nature fractale des mathématiques de Mandelbrot et l’abstraction pure. Deux extrêmes qui se rejoignent dans l’image, un double regard.
Chacun s’aventure seul dans un même paysage, sans concertation. Pourtant, au moment de confronter les images, des correspondances troublantes apparaissent. Olga du Saillant et Felix Cholet s’inscrivent dans une démarche de témoins et d’interprètes. Ils saisissent des formes mouvantes et fragiles : empreintes transformées par le vent, silhouettes féminines qui se dérobent et se recomposent, tant de traces aussitôt disparues. Si les tirages argentiques en noir et blanc s’inscrivent dans une tradition photographique classique, leur sujet et leur traitement en déplacent les codes. L’image ne documente plus : elle devient abstraction, mémoire et effacement.
L’expérimentation des supports fait basculer l’image, elle devient objet, presque sculpture, s’imposant physiquement dans l’espace. Chaque cadre, conçu sur mesure en dialogue avec l’œuvre et entièrement réalisé par Felix Cholet, participe de cette métamorphose. Le médium argentique repousse ses propres limites et s’ancre dans une dynamique contemporaine. L’image n’est plus seulement surface, elle devient volume, expérience physique. À cela s’ajoute le travail minutieux d’Olga du Saillant : elle réalise à la main le repiquage, geste rare qui donne à chaque tirage une dimension artisanale.
Le livre TOMBÉ DU CIEL rassemble trois années de travail et prolonge l’expérience des expositions. Édité par equator books, il inscrit les œuvres dans un dialogue avec la poésie moderne et surréaliste, source d’inspiration majeure pour les artistes et origine de leurs titres d’exposition. Les fragments poétiques qui les accompagnent ne les expliquent pas, ils résonnent avec elles comme des souffles ou des échos. Comme les photographies, ils refusent le récit linéaire pour une forme organique et abstraite.
Ainsi se cristallise un élan commun : un projet à la fois livre et exposition, porté par la résonance de l’œil et du cœur.
